Westchester RiverWalk of Hope Fundraiser… Who’s Coming?

Haitian OrphansNot too long ago my brother Todd and I were exchanging messages on Facebook, brainstorming a charitable event fundraiser to benefit the orphans of Haiti.  He mentioned hiking the entire Appalachian Trail and I thought it would be a great idea.

After spending a little more time with it we realized that it could be just as effective doing an event on a slightly smaller scale, possibly in our own backyard in Westchester.

Last week while I was reading Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink down at a bench situated along the RiverWalk in Croton-on-Hudson, a thought occurred to me: “What if we were to hike this entire path?”  Tracing the trail map, the entire Westchester RiverWalk stretches 46.6 miles from Yonkers to just north of the Bear Mountain bridge where it meets the Appalachian Trail.

Hudson River CrotonNow I don’t believe this feat could be accomplished in one day, so I was thinking that we could plan out a spot at Croton Point to setup camp.  Once we get a group together a pledge sheet will be distributed to every hiker and upon completion all funds will be transparently donated to a charity we agree on via an online poll.

A few of my early choices are Haiti Children Mercy & Sharing, UNICEF’s Haiti Earthquake Children’s Appeal, A Child’s Hope Foundation, and Haitian Orphans Wish (HOW).

The hike is scheduled for May 29th-30th.  If you want to join us feel free to RSVP over at our Facebook group.  Between my blog and the Facebook Event page you can stay up-to-date with all of the latest news regarding the event.

If you are interested in being part of the organization of this event please let me know, or if you have some suggestions join the conversation.
